At Plumbers Battersea, we get many calls about leaking toilets. Often, the causes and the solutions are relatively simple, at least on a temporary basis. Here is our quick guide to toilet leaks and what to do about them until you can call us for a permanent repair.Usually, a leaking toilet is caused by one of three things, a cracked toilet pan, a damaged cistern or a leaking overflow pipe. These aren’t the only causes of a leaking toilet, but they’re the most common. To temporarily fix a cracked toilet pan, the first thing you must do is empty the pan of water as best you can. Then fill in any hole or crack you find with putty. You can find putty appropriate for the purpose at your local DIY shop. This will stop the leak until you can get a plumber in to effect a permanent repair. If you have damage to the cistern, empty was much water as you can from it and fill in any leaks or holes with special putty. If neither of these are the problem, you may have a leaking overflow; the ballcock may not be properly shutting off the water tank’s valve. If this is the case, you could have a damaged washer or a damaged valve. You can pick up a replacement washer or value at your local DIY shop. Then, simply remove as much water as you can from the tank, at least enough to allow you to get at the valve and washer, and replace as required. When in doubt, it’s always best to seek the advice of a professional. We can save you precious time and money by quickly identifying and fixing the problem. Give us a call today, we’ll be happy to help.
